Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes, or high blood sugar, that only pregnant women get. If a woman gets high blood sugar when she's pregnant, but she never had high blood sugar before, she has gestational diabetes. Approximately 2 to 15 percent of all pregnant women in the United States are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. If not treated, gestational diabetes can cause problems for mothers and babies. Some of these problems can be serious. Gestational diabetes can be controlled through a low-glycemic diet and, in some cases, insulin injections.
